10 digits required in October

Starting on October 21st, folks with area codes 513 and 859 must use all 10 digits, including the area code, when dialing local numbers.  That means if your number is 513-xxx-xxxx, then you must dial 513 when calling anyone who also has a 513 area code, even if it’s your grandma a few miles down the road.

Why are they making me change my routine? The FCC has adopted a new code of 988 for the nationwide National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Life Crisis Lifeline.  This new code replaces the current 800 number (1-800-273-TALK).  The new 988 number will go into effect on July 16, 2022.  In order for the 988 code to work in this area, we must use the full 10 digit number when dialing.

Okay, what should I do now? Unless you are my dad, most people use their smart phones to call family and friends. My dad prides himself on remembering people’s phone numbers.  However, for the majority of us, we would be in a lot of trouble if we lost access to our contacts list. The first place to start is to review your contact list and make sure that all of your contacts have the area code listed.  Otherwise, on October 21st, you may have problems trying to reach out to all your bff’s as your smartphone will be hitting a brick wall without all the digits.
